ASKOV RIDECENTER

Harriet Cordelia Nielsen has created Askov Ridecenter's "The Unique Offer" for physically, socially and educationally challenged children. The combination of horseback riding and educational training gives the children the opportunity of participating at school on more equal terms.

Problem
In elementary school, many special-needs children have a hard time functioning within the traditional school framework, unable to learn the necessary materials due to motor speech, neuromuscular, or social challenges. Many of these children are relocated to schools for children with special needs, but with the right stimuli, they could function optimally in public schools.
Solution
Askov Ridecenter combines riding horses and teaching to create education programs that are more concrete. First the horse is readied and then the child on horseback embarks on a process that incorporates what they are learning at school. The combination of sensory impressions, the horses’ immediate feedback, and physical learning style lets children learn in a completely different way than the method prescribed in the classroom. The tools that children gained at the Askov Ridecenter could then be brought back with them into their classrooms, helping them complete daily school activities on more equal terms.
